Face it, you can’t get your mind around time-travel. That’s why you just fucking do it and don’t look back… or is that forward? So don’t be surprised if you go to shows on this Back To The Future The Ride / Universal Studios Florida tour and feel like you never even saw me play. Divergent time lines can just wipe out entire memories instantaneously. Trust me though, you loved it. Just look how confused these newspapers are. They already wrote reviews of the shows that have not happened yet.
Portland Mercury write up:UNIVERSAL STUDIOS FL, BACK TO THE FUTURE THE RIDE, GHOST ANIMAL(Dunes, 1909 NE MLK) Based on their names alone, it would seem there were no two bands destined to join forces more than Seattle’s Universal Studios Florida and Back to the Future the Ride from Los Angeles. Consider it an added bonus that their tunes are the perfect complement to each other as well—both projects channel a broad spectrum of electronic music to spout layered, halcyon waves of drone, reverb and nü-new-age ambient textures. While USF’s incandescent ebbing and flowing will cause a few more heads to nod, BTTFTR wins points for originality in triggering his compositions’ sounds. The solo explorations of Foot Village’s Brian Miller, BTTFTR leaves the DeLorean in park and time-travels using a souped-up, thrift store-purchased plastic guitar instead—sort of like watching someone shred Bill Laswell on Guitar Hero. It’s as awesome as it sounds. EJ
LA Weekly write upBack to the Future: The Ride, Universal Studios FloridaBy Chris MartinsThose are not typos above, nor is this entry a lost orphan from our nonexistent travel section. Universal Studios Florida and Back to the Future the Ride are a pair of bands currently trolling the West Coast together on what clearly should have been named the “Cease and Desist” tour. We’re not sure how they get away with it, but we’re glad they do, as the two previously unaffiliated outfits each trade in sounds rich with nostalgia and a certain wide-eyed magic. U.S.F. hail from Seattle, making music “[not] necessarily representative of the city we’re from, but more the places we’ve been.” Naturally, theirs is a sun-kissed, tropical sound with aqueous electronic textures and blissful jams à la Animal Collective. Their indie release, Oceans Sunbirds, is a fine listen, with not a rain cloud in sight. L.A.’s BttFtR features members of the “drum-and-shout” collective Foot Village, but specializes solely in sweet sounds seemingly influenced by Cluster and Eno — happy music, served up minimal and floaty.
